Bowen Island Water Tank Foundation & Water Main
On Bowen Island, BC, Tekton Construction delivered a complex, high-impact water infrastructure project that increased capacity, extended the life of the community’s system, and ensured uninterrupted service throughout construction.
This specialty build began with the excavation, concrete forming, and installation of reinforcing steel for a new water tank foundation atop a remote, mountainous site. Due to the location’s inaccessibility, our team first refurbished the road to safely transport materials and equipment. Working in solid rock just eight feet from the existing tank required precision and environmental care — 1-inch holes were drilled in a precise pattern and filled with fish-safe expanding grout, preventing shock waves that could damage the existing concrete structure or harm the surrounding environment.
The new tank was mounted alongside the existing one, boosting the district’s water storage capacity while preserving service for residents. Using a hot tap system, water continued to flow without interruption, with critical restoration work performed at midnight while residents slept to avoid disruption. The system was built with future adaptability in mind — allowing for increased capacity or a complete switchover to the new tank if needed.
A specialty valve chamber was custom-fabricated to district specifications, seamlessly integrating water meters and meeting all regulatory requirements. Additional work at the Bowen Island Water Treatment Plant included re-piping the system and installing a booster pump, further enhancing performance and reliability.
